Chapter Nine

Corb hadn’t driven to town planning to make love to Laurel. After Jacqueline’s surprise visit to the ranch, his mother had cornered him for another little talk.

She’d helped him see that an elopement wasn’t what the family needed right now. And his plan had been to open a discussion with Laurel about it.

But somehow, when she’d opened that door, kissing her had moved to the top of his agenda.

And he’d been blown away.

All fine and well to talk about getting married because it was “the right thing” to do.

But here was the baser truth. He wanted her.

He’d made a baby with this woman. Shouldn’t he know what it felt like to make love to her?

And when she led him willingly upstairs, all rational thought left him. Maybe, in a corner of his mind, he hoped having sex with her would bring back memories of the night they’d conceived their baby.

It didn’t happen, though.

He felt as if he was exploring the lush, magical wonders of her body for the very first time. Only at the end, when he was gazing into her flushed and smiling face, was there a whisper in the back of his head. I’ve seen her like this before.

He closed his eyes, waiting for more memories to come flooding in. When that didn’t happen, he opened his eyes to find her watching him intently as if waiting for him to say something. But he stayed silent not wanting to admit that it hadn’t worked. The past was still locked away in some isolated section of his brain.

When he gathered her into his arms to hold her close, he knew that he had done this the first time, as well. He felt her soft face pressed against his chest and he wondered what she was thinking.

And an odd question occurred to him.

How had he stacked up...compared to the first time?

“Corb?”

He hadn’t had a headache all day. But suddenly he felt the familiar tension in his skull. He was happy holding her. Very happy. But he didn’t want to talk. He didn’t want to admit that even after making love to her, he still couldn’t remember the time before.

He considered pretending he was asleep. But Laurel had already shifted up on her elbow and was looking at him. He studied her beautiful eyes, golden-brown and flecked with copper. His gaze shifted lower, to the freckles on her nose. Also copper. He kissed them.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Very okay. But I need to talk to you about something.”

His gut tightened.

“I know you can’t remember this—”

The tension in his head turned to a pulsing pain.

“—but that first week we spent together, you talked quite a bit about Jacqueline.”

Jacqueline? Why the hell was she talking about Jacqueline?

“You sounded so done with her. So sure that you’d made the right decision not to marry her.”

God help him, he had no idea where she was going with this. “It’s true. Don’t tell me you have a problem with that?”

“The only problem I have is believing you.
